In a remarkable display of bravery, soldiers have been honored with medals for their courageous actions in subduing Sgt. Quornelius Radford, who allegedly opened fire on five of his fellow officers. This commendation highlights the soldiers' quick thinking and valor in the face of a dangerous and unexpected situation.

Incident Overview

At Fort Stewart, Georgia, a distressing event unfolded when Sgt. Quornelius Radford, aged 28, allegedly used a personal handgun to shoot five of his fellow soldiers. The incident occurred swiftly on a Wednesday, with the assailant being subdued promptly by other troops present. While the Army has refrained from discussing potential motives, the impact of this act was significant, leading to several soldiers being hospitalized.

Soldier Response

The response from the soldiers at the scene was notable for its bravery and quick action. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll highlighted the courageous efforts during a press briefing, stating, "The fast action of these soldiers under stress, trauma, and active threat undoubtedly saved lives." Describing the scene, he recounted how one soldier tackled Radford, despite the clear danger posed by the armed assailant. Another soldier then helped to restrain the shooter until federal law enforcement arrived.

Staff Sgt. Aaron Turner was first to engage and subdue Radford, with Master Sgt. Justin Thomas assisting in the restraint. Meanwhile, four other soldiers, including Staff Sgt. Melissa Taylor, provided critical first aid to the wounded. Taylor, who was near the scene, rushed to assist a downed soldier upon hearing the gunshot and seeing the aftermath.

Medal Awards

For their "outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement or service," the six soldiers involved in subduing the assailant and aiding the wounded were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. This recognition reflects their exceptional courage and quick thinking under pressure.

Victim Status

The shooting resulted in various injuries among the soldiers, with two still receiving hospital care at the time of reporting. Brig Gen John Lubas provided an update on their conditions. One soldier remains hospitalized at Winn Army Community Hospital on Fort Stewart and is reportedly in high spirits with expectations of a possible discharge soon. Another is in a more critical condition at Savannah Memorial Community Hospital, facing a longer recovery period.

Three of the wounded soldiers have been released, demonstrating promising progress in their recovery.
